OTTAWA LAKE — Whiteford Township okayed a 12 year tax abatement Tuesday for a company that plans on adding five permanent jobs to its employment force.
The Bullard Co. was approved for a 12-year, 50 percent tax abatement by the township board.
“It would  be counter-productive to not do this to create jobs and help a business expand,” said Walter Ruhl, township supervisor. “If we don’t do this, they’ll probably look for another place to operate.”
The company, located on Schnipke Dr., specializes in pipe, steel, loading racks and other types of equipment. A current tax abatement is about to expire, township officials said.
Mr. Ruhl added that the company plans on expanding by 8,000-square-feet and add five new, permanent jobs.
In other business Tuesday:
n The board voted to chip in $10,000 toward a $119,000 safety grant received by the road commission from the Michigan Department of Transportation for Whiteford Center Rd.
n Trustee Larraine Dressel announced she will not seek another four-year term. “I’m not running again,” she said. “I think five terms is enough. This is my 20th year.”
